When we begin to write, we find that it’s hard to sometimes find inspiration, advice or any solid help. In this post, I will show you five books you need to pick up to help alongside the process.
#5 Writing Down The Bones
Though written in the late 80’s, Natalie Goldbergs book really helped alongside my struggles of writing. Though not structural on grammar rules, Natalie’s book really helps you unleash the inner writer through her exercises in the book.
#4 The Thorn Necklace: Healing Through Writing and the Creative Process
More modern but certainly not least important is The Thorn Necklace: Healing Through Writing and the Creative Process by Francesca Lia Block.
This book is phenomenal and contemporary styles of writing, struggling with everyday life and your creative mind, or sharing her own life in small tidbits, this definitely makes the list!
#3 Bird by Bird
Bird by bird was released in 1994, but still holds a great value in the writing world. Anne Lamott describes how to write in a artistic fashion with very helpful advice.
#2 Story Genius: How to Outline Your Novel Using the Secrets of Brain Science (Before You Waste Three Years Writing 327 Pages That Go Nowhere)
This one, odd and with humor, teaches you the smart ways on how to outline your books.
When structure is needed, we find that Lisa Cron helps us out with all of her nifty tips and tricks.
#1 On Writing
On Writing by Stephen King is one of the best instructional writing books out there. Obviously by his success we know his words are meaningful and intelligent, which they definitely shine through on this book.
